Adventures in Metro-land

Yay! We finally got our tickets!

Close your eyes, and point...

That basically summed up our day. It was another Saturday, and Kris & I invited two friends, Heather & Monique, to go on anther one of our adventures. This time, the goal was to ride Monterrey's metro system. So we drove downtown (yep, you have to drive to use the metro!), and meandered our way down some steep flights of stairs to the ticket booth. Or rather, the machines that sold the tickets. And that didn't take anything but 1, 2, 5, and 10 peso coins. Between the four of us, I think we had enough coins for 1 one-way trip each, and we really weren't prepared for an adventure that would have us stranded "somewhere in Monterrey." Whoever thought this system up didn't think too carefully - there weren't even change machines available! We finally begged some security guy who got us a handful of 1 peso coins, and we painstakingly fed them into the machine. One coin slowly after the other.

To our surprise, the metro was extremely clean and modern.

Going down to the subway tracks.

There were only two cars in each "train", which could either mean that a) no one takes the metro and therefore only two cars are needed, or b) that there is so little space that no one wants to take the metro. We randomly picked a stop that had a picture of a pyramid beside it. We got off there, and met two really cute old men - one with an accordion and one with a guitar. We asked if we could follow them, but they shooed us away. :(

You can almost hear the sad violin playing as our new friends walked away...

And to make things worse, apparently there was no pyramid or any pyramid-like attraction at our stop. So we walked around and Monique bought a stray dog food, a bone and a dish filled with purified water. We then hiked up this hill and roamed around a neighbourhood, bought drinks (Monique bought beer) from a convenience store that smelled like rotten meat, and sat on the curb looking at someone's house. It was definitely a different neighbourhood than the one we live in!

Somewhere in Monterrey

Even though we really did nothing, all of us were exhausted. We headed back to El Barrio Antiguo, where we stopped at Nueva Luna for some really yummy and really gigantic, frozen Margaritas. Yum.
