It was a rainy day today. The typhoon is almost certainly headed straight for us. And it’s not just any typhoon, but a SUPER typhoon! Its name is Typhoon Melor, and honestly, I don’t need to experience another Super Typhoon, especially when I’m not even at home. So we called the airline today, Cathay Pacific, and got our REALLY REALLY cheap ticket changed to leave tomorrow (Wed.) instead of Friday, since the typhoon is supposed to hit on Thursday. And they did it all for free! I love Asia!
We went to a really famous temple today – it’s called and it’s covered in gold leaf. It was beautiful in the rain and would have probably been even more beautiful in the sunshine. We also moved hotels and ended up at Hotel Monterey Kyoto, which was just a gorgeous hotel. We strolled around Nishiki Market as well, ate some cheap Japanese food at lunch, then splurged for a Kaiseki dinner (which is a fancy Japanese meal with many courses).
We’ve had a great time in Kyoto. I’m just sad we have no more time or stomach space to squeeze in another bowl of Ramen!
Kinkaku Pavilion
As usual, Kaeden was fast asleep at this famous attraction.
Nishiki Market
Fresh edamame! (Soy beans) Assorted pickled/fermented Japanese vegetables
Samurai Sword Shop
We came here thinking maybe we could pick up a souvenir – but the smallest sword that Kris would have wanted cost a whopping $30,000 CDN, so we had to settle for just a photo outside.
Kaiseki Dinner
We had this huge and expensive meal. It consisted of eight courses:
Course 1: Japanese appetizers (many pickled things)
Course 2: Very yummy sashimi Course 3: Soup in a teapot
Course 4: Assorted seafood, including abalone Course 5: Sea Bream Fish Head (see its teeth on the right?)
