We had the honour of Desmond visiting us in Kaohsiung at the beginning of our Christmas break! We thought we had nothing to show him, but at then end of his day-and-a-half whirlwind tour of our current hometown, we still had things we hadn't done yet, including, for example, the LARGEST Hello Kitty Ferris Wheel ride in the world (who knew there was even another one?!)! This blog was written mostly by me, but I was feeling boring with my comments, so I passed it onto Kris & Des. I'll let you figure out who was the author of which comments.

First stop: Korean BBQ, where Des ate probably 5 plates
of meat.
Bonding time. Kris kept beating Des, and I scored over 200 points!
Des riding a dog.
At the Kaoshiung Harbour.
The tunnel that distracted us from going
to the British Consulate. It turned out this took
us to the Sun Yat Sen University.
We really had to restrain ourselves from feeding all
those strays....
Des started to look, frighteningly enough, more
and more like our dad on vacation. (I'll have to get
him some white shoes and knee socks.)
We were going to take Des to the old British Consulate
for a view of the sunset, but were sidetracked by a cool-looking
tunnel, which led us to the beach. But we were too
cheap to pay ~$2 (50 NT) to enter the beach area to view the sunset,
so we took him to a parking lot instead and sat on the cement wall
overlooking the ocean.
Des "fishing" on the wharf/parking lot.
We also took Des to Kaohsiung's Premier Destination: Love River...
We took a little cruise on the river, even though we didn't get
our discount because we lived in Kaohsiung County and not in Kaohsiung City.
Then...
...we ate some very Taiwanese food :)
Our last stop of that Friday night was at the Rui Feng nightmarket.
These are REALLY good candy-coated strawberry skewers wrapped
in edible rice paper, then drizzled with condensed milk. Mmm...
We also played this game - I got 245 points while Des & Kris
made a dismal showing.
I got to pick the prize - it was a difficult choice.
Des & Kris also played baseball - but as Des put it, "It
wasn't softball season."
We showed Des around our village of Dashe
on Saturday morning, making the requisite stop at
the basketball game in town. Kris proceeded to clobber Des
with a whopping 511 points. But even I beat Des... sigh...
We also went to our favourite local breakfast shop and had
dan bing (蛋餅) - one with bacon & two house specials that
had basil & pork. Des also had a hamburger & soy milk.
We spent some time finding Monkey Mountain, or 守山. I was huffing....
A view of Kaohsiung harbour from the mountain.
The 85 story building with a hole in its middle.
White people in Kaoshiung are apparently tourist attractions too!
Spot the monkey. (hint: The one in the middle)
Two dopey guys thinking they're in really good health -
too bad the stones were so round and polished...
Myself and Des
Kris didn't shave today.
3 Monkeys vs. Des...equals...new disease in Canada.
Kris and Marion sitting in a tree...K.I.S.S.I.N.G...
Des posing very slinkily by the Smartboard.
Santa comes to Taiwan, Taiwanese style.
Des's new pet. This big dog kept hoping Des would take him home with him...
Hard-hearted Des...
Riding our hogs in the hills. The power is unbelievable.
