The Cows are on Strike

Yep, now that we're out of the water and electricity shortage, we've been having a milk shortage. It's been going on now since we've returned to Taiwan, which is exactly one month ago! Every time I go to any store that used to sell milk, I find myself holding my breath, in hopes of procuring such a precious commodity.

It's actually pretty hilarious watching the crowds around the milk section. You'd think someone was giving away a million dollars. Costco was especially funny. Everyone could see the milk in the back part of the refrigeration section, but only staff could go get them to refill the shelves. So people lingered hopefully, waiting and waiting, and glaring at people who were cutting in this unspoken line.

I've purchased about 2 half-gallons of milk since I've been back, and the prices are pretty ridiculous. My last half-gallon cost me almost $6 CDN (175 NT), and I had to settle for regular, not skim, milk. I've asked at several stores as to why there is no milk, and every time, they tell me it's because it's been too hot for the cows to produce milk. Really? Every year it's this hot, but I don't remember there being such a clamour for milk. The other reason I get is, "Because of the typhoon, the cows are all sick."

I just think the cows are on strike until they get a raise.

OK, so it's not just my imagination! There's a rush for milk in Taipei, too. I've stopped trying to get milk at Wellcome or Carrefour. 7-Eleven seems to consistently have some, though they're more expensive...
