Goodbye Taiwan...

There were definitely some weepy eyes and tears on our last day of school in Taiwan. Overall, it was a successful year! Three of the "last day" moments stood out especially for us:

1) One middle-school girl was so sad - she had to switch schools and she could not stop crying. I'm so glad we had time to spend with her over the course of the year. I haven't been hugged like the way should hugged me in a long time.... I will miss her and all the others with similar family situations.

2) A middle-school boy who often got in trouble: I teasingly asked him to write in my yearbook, expecting the usual silly comments from him. He took it and hid and wrote. He then promptly threw the book into my hands and fled. I thought, "What did he write this time....?" I opened it, and tears came to my eyes as a I read: "I will miss you."

3) A boy in Kris' class who had been labeled as a troublemaker in earlier years became one of the dearest students. He gave Kris two cows as a present this year, and when we opened the gift, we were both thinking, "What is this?!" Accompanied with the present was a long letter, neatly written in cursive, explaining how much he thought of Kris as a teacher and explaining the meaning of the cows and why he had chosen them.

These really are the moments that make it really worthwhile to be a teacher.
